Pergola vs. Gazebo: What's Actually the Difference?

Pergola and gazebo are two of the most commonly confused terms in outdoor living — and while they solve overlapping problems, they're genuinely different structures with different strengths.

What a pergola actually is

A pergola is an open-roof structure — typically a series of parallel beams or slats supported by posts, creating filtered shade rather than full coverage. It's usually rectangular or square, often attached to a home or positioned to define a specific outdoor space like a patio or dining area.

What a gazebo actually is

A gazebo is a fully roofed, typically freestanding structure — often octagonal or round, with a solid or shingled roof providing complete overhead coverage. Gazebos are traditionally more of a standalone garden feature than an extension of the home's living space.

The core difference: coverage

The biggest practical difference is overhead coverage. A pergola's open or semi-open roof filters sunlight but doesn't fully block rain, while a gazebo's solid roof provides complete weather protection. This single difference drives most of the decision between the two.

The core difference: how they're used

Pergolas are typically designed as an extension of a home's outdoor living space — attached or positioned adjacent to a patio, often integrated with the home's architecture. Gazebos are more commonly a standalone feature, sometimes placed elsewhere in a yard as a destination rather than an extension of existing living space.

Which fits your backyard?

If you're looking to define and shade an existing patio or outdoor living area connected to your home, a pergola is typically the better fit. If you want a standalone covered destination elsewhere in your yard with full weather protection, a gazebo-style structure (or in our case, often a freestanding patio cover) may make more sense.

A note on what we build

At Chandler Awning, our core structures — pergolas and patio covers — cover both ends of this spectrum: pergolas for filtered, architecturally integrated shade, and patio covers for full overhead protection.
